More Fall Updates!

10 Nov

From volunteering, to studying, to partying – the sisters of Tau Sigma Phi have had one busy fall! Here’s a taste of what we’ve been up to…

We competed hard during Ottawa’s annual Greek Olympics and. . . at the end of the weekend took SECOND PLACE!! The competition was intense and we were neck and neck with Xi Delta Theta for most of the weekend.  A BIG CONGRATS to the Xi Delts who ultimately brought home the gold.

For the second year Tau Sigs also volunteered their time to be a part of the One Match Bone Marrow Drive at Carleton University. Our girls helped students and faculty “swab” themselves and register to be a part of a nation-wide bone marrow registry. For more information about how you can register or volunteer visit: http://www.onematch.ca/

A big THANK-YOU to Tammy and the rest of the staff at Ottawa’s newest (and tastiest!) gelato shop Stella Luna Gelato Cafe for hosting our latest sisterhood night. Tammy gave all of us Tau Sig girls a personal lesson on how to make gelato and sorbet. Her tutorial was quickly followed by a feast… naturally. It was great night! Also a special thanks to Loren Romei, our sisterhood chair, for planning the great event!

Finally our newest Theta girls are planning their “Candy Shop” pub night! It’ll be Friday November 18 at Liqour Store and if you’re 19 + you better be there. Click here for details on how you can get yourself a ticket!

We’re all excited to welcome you lovely ladies into our sisterhood!
On October 2 Tau Sigs participated in Ottawa’s CIBC Run for Cure and raised over $2,300 for breast cancer research. As many of you know, the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation is the main charity we fundraise for throughout the year, and the Run for the Cure has become one of our favourite events. This year, us TSP girls were out in full force braving the cold to run and walk the 5 kilometre route! Well all of us Tau Sigs worked hard to fundraise, a special mention must go out to Jodie Warren and Stephanie Hayward Johns, who each raised over $400 for the event. Way to go girls!
Next, here at Carleton October means Thanksgiving break, midterms, the start of cooler weather, but for those in the Greek community on campus, it also means…. GREEK O’s! This weekend, Tau Sigs will compete against other Ottawa sororities in the annual Greek Olympics. We placed FIRST last year and full well plan on bringing home the gold again. Let the games begin.

ONLY DA’ PHINEST: NEW RUSH GEAR!

4 Sep

It’s that time of year.

September means a lot of things for university students: the beginning of a new school year, frosh week… but for those who participate in Greek life, September means RUSH.

And this year us TSP ladies are going to be reppin’ our sorority better than ever. We’ve got awesome new rush shirts, courtesy of the guys at Decent Urban Rails.

SO if you wanna roll with the best and are interested in becoming a sister of Tau Sigma Phi – stop any lady wearing one the awesome tank tops below, and she’ll fill you in.

Hannah in India!

4 Sep

Earlier this summer our sister Hannah Rolland visited India to volunteer with the charity Operation Groundswell. While in India, Hannah helped build rain water wells and volunteered at local orphanages. It was quite an experience and a great way to make a difference in the world. We’re all so proud of Hannah and the work she’s done abroad!

To read more about her experience in India check out her travel blog here.

Alumni Lauren Dodds working with EWB in Africa

8 Aug

Check out this article in Carleton Now about Tau Sigma Phi alumni Lauren Dodds and the awesome work she’s doing with Engineers Without Borders in Africa!

Lauren recently graduated from Carleton with a degree in political science and was very active during her years at Carleton, not only with Tau Sigma Phi, but with several other on campus initiatives as well.

After working in Ghana for 4 months last summer, Lauren headed back to Africa in July and will be living there for the next two years working to help small-holds farmers make a better living for themselves.

You can keep up with Lauren by following her blog Gone Away the Ghana Way

We’er all so proud of your work Lauren!

A long overdue… SUMMER UPDATE!

13 Jun

My apologies for the lack of blogging over the past few weeks, us TSP girls have been very busy. Here’s a little taste of what’s been occupying our time:

Hannah Rolland is in India!

She’s volunteering with an organization called Operation Groundswell in various locations throughout the country. Operation Groundswell works closely with organizations in India like Sadar Sabah, which provides social assistance to residents in the town of Ajmer. Hannah will be working in an orphanage, a women’s shelter and a centre for blind children, while she’s in Ajmer. She’s worked hard to fundraise for her trip, and is hoping to purchase new sports equipment, craft supplies and a stereo for the orphanage she’s volunteering at. We’re all very proud of you Hannah!

Loren Romei is working for the North Shore News!

Now back in Vancouver for the summer, Lo has landed herself an internship at the North Shore News, a newspaper based in North Vancouver. Over the past few weeks she’s written stories on the Royal Wedding, teen drinking and Canada’s favourite hockey team at the moment the Vancouer Canucks. You can read more about her reporting adventures on her blog. Keep up the awesome work Lo, you’re doing great!

Marika Washchyshyn is working for iVillage.ca and heading to France!

Home in Toronto for the summer, Marika is busy working as an editorial intern for iVillage.ca, a newly launched online women’s magazine. All of us have learned a thing or two from Marika’s articles, like what the best hangover cure is, how to throw the ultimate hockey play off party and what we need to know about our cell phones and cancer. This July Marika is also heading to France, where she’s taking a multimedia journalism course, before embarking on a European adventure with her boyfriend, Graeme. She’s a tank.

Avery Zingel is making sweet music and writing about it too!

Since summer started Avery’s been busy with her band Boxfull of Groundhogs. So far this summer they’ve played a couple shows in the Toronto area, so if you live in the GTA CHECK THEM OUT. She’s also been busy backstage, covering arts and entertainment in Toronto and Ottawa for CanCulture magazine, a new online publication started by some Carleton journalism students, so check that out too! Go Avery Go!

Alex Weber is back from Europe and working at the Ottawa Citizen!

Last month Alex and her roomates took off on a 3-week backpacking tour of Europe, and even stopped by London for the Royal Wedding! We loved following her tweets and reading about her adventure on her blog. Since she’s returned, she’s started working at the Ottawa Citizen, where she’ll be busy until school starts up again in September. So, if you’re in Ottawa, read the newspaper to check out her work!

New Sisterhood Chair: Congrats Lo!

4 Apr

Lo in her hometown Vancouver, embracing her inner-tree hugger.

A big congrats to Loren Romei, Tau Sigma Phi’s new Sisterhood Chair!

Since Loren (more affectionately known to us TSP girls as Lo!) joined Tau Sig as a member of Gamma Class in 2009, she’s been an amazing sister to all of us. Always there to offer a kind word or a hug, Lo’s caring and comforting personality will make her an excellent Sisterhood Chair.

Although we’re sad to see Hannah Rolland resign from her position, we know Lo will do an amazing job!

Congratulations!

Our SUPERSTAR Sister

1 Apr

We’re all super stoked for our sister Avery. Her band BoxFull of Groundhogs just released an awesome song called Dead Riots. It’s a free download on Sound Cloud, so everyone check it out.

Semi Formal and Our New “Sweetheart”

28 Mar

This weekend the sisters of Tau Sigma Phi celebrated their spring semi formal…

Renner McCreath, Tau Sigma Phi's Sweetheart 2011/2012

Although it’s still freezing here in Ottawa, everybody was lookin’ hot on Friday night!

Looking especially hot, was Renner McCreath – who was named Tau Sigma Phi’s sweetheart of the year. Renner, a TKE brother, has been a long time Tau Sig supporter and a great friend to many of our sisters. He’s planned several amazing rush events over the past two years and is always out in full force supporting our events.

We can’t wait to see even more of him in the fall…
